Ashford Sinfonia started life as a Beginners’ and Returners’ orchestra around 1990. Initially it was part of Kent Music Schools, and the entry level was at about Grade 3. The music played is mainly classical and popular (movie themes, TV themes etc.) and is selected by the conductor and members of the orchestra.
Five years ago the orchestra became independent, run by its members. Subscriptions of £40 a term have made it financially self supporting. Since then the Sinfonia has supported Ashford’s Towers School in a presentation of film and show music, and joined with Hythe Salvation Army Band and FHODs in four Christmas Carol spectaculars, as well as producing its own concerts, now three times a year.
Under the baton of Wes Carroll, assisted by Les Lake, the orchestra welcomes new members, and prides itself on being supportive of newcomers and less confident players. We meet on Monday evenings in term time at The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Church Road, Willesborough, Ashford. Just come along at 7.30pm.
