Christmas Concerts

This year we will be taking part in two Christmas concerts – the first being our by now traditional performance with Hythe Salvation Army Band and Community Choir. Sadly, the tickets for this concert were released very early this year, and are now fully taken up. The concert is on 9th December, and we will be reverting to our 2 p.m. rehearsal, as we will not have met with Wes again until that afternoon.

The second concert will be the following day, Monday 10th December, in conjunction with Ashford Community Choir, and will take place in St Mary’s church in Ashford town centre. The concert will start at 7.30 p.m., and we will meet a little before that to warm up – probably 7.00 p.m.

Change of dates and times

As a result of an unfortunate clash of events, not least the World Cup Final, Wimbledon Final and the chairman’s failure to check the booking of the venue, we have had to change the dates of the Summer Concert and the AGM.

The Concert will now be held on Monday 16th July at 7.30 p.m., meeting beforehand at 7.00 p.m. in the usual venue of Willesborough church. The Social evening and AGM will be at Yew Tree House, Ashford Road, Charing TN27 0EE meeting at 6.30 on Tuesday 17th July.

Many apologies to those inconvenienced by these changes.

Spring Concert

Today’s Spring Concert was a slightly poignant affair, as Wes Carroll’s last (probably!) concert with us. We abandoned Hall of the Mountain King as needing more work, but made good our promise to perform Hugo Cole’s Black Lion Dances, which was well received despite the odd mischance. One of the advantages of playing a little known piece is that it is little known – so no one knows if there are any mistakes! Unfortunately the composer’s daughter was unable to be with us after all – though it was a big ask for her to come from Oxford for a 20 minute performance!

Gilbert and Sullivan were played as they ought to be – by an amateur orchestra: always more fun! We welcomed the arrival of Gill Booker, our new conductor for next term, in the audience. It is with a sense of gratitude and relief that we are now secure for next term, and all being well further into the future.

Our parting gift to Wes was a contribution from our audience of £170 towards the Hythe Salvation Army’s trip to Africa to help some disadvantaged villages. A truly generous donation from friends and family.

We start our next term on St. George’s Day. Have a very good Easter Holiday everyone!

Update on changes

Following last evening’s rehearsal to which the brave turned turned out despite the snow, further news became available about the rest of this term and on into the future. Les Lake ably took us through some of our pieces last night, but for the next two rehearsals Wes will be rejoining us. Les is then available for the next two weeks, but following further discussion about the concert date, and Wes’s discovery that he will be available on 25th it was decided to revert to the original date, thus addressing Hon. Sec’s concerns.

I am awaiting final confirmation from Wes that he will be able to lead a concert on 25 March. He has also kindly offered to circulate all his contacts in the conducting world to see if anyone is available to take on the post in the future.

Finally, it was suggested that it would be nice to have a larger audience than previously. To that end, it was agreed that everyone should take responsibility for inviting friends and family, and that the committee members would look to advertise the forthcoming event.

I’m off skiing, so have fun, enjoy the weather and see you all in 3 weeks!

Roger
