Christmas Concert

Well, we finally did it – our first concert in two years. Together with Ashford Community Choir, Music Director Karen Hill, we gave of our best, and were joined by more than 100 friends, relatives and total strangers! Not to say that everything was perfect – there were the inevitable ‘not quite together’ moments, but quickly corrected, and not even noticed by the audience. Having spoken to many of them, they thoroughly enjoyed the event, and joined in with the singing despite having to wear masks.

Covid Risk Assessment was duly performed, precautions implemented, and hopefully nobody was infected. we can only hope this was the next step in the long return to normality for the orchestra. It also seems that several members of the choir would be keen to do more joint performances.

Well done to everyone concerned. Riding for the Disabled Association were very happy to report raising a sum of over £600, and we were very happy to have played our part in this.

Returning at last!

At last we have approval to recommence live music! As of Monday 19th July we will have 3 rehearsals at our usual time of 7.30pm – perhaps best to arrive before 7.15pm to get settled in.

Please do not attend rehearsals if you have any symptoms of Covid19 – fever, new continuous cough, change or loss of sensation of smell or taste (among others!).

We will take a register of attendees and Roger will sign into the church register on behalf of all of us. This will avoid broadcasting everyone’s details! Sanitiser will be available, and we will aim to space ourselves at least 1m apart. The church team will clean the chairs on Tuesday morning.

Many thanks to Gill for agreeing to these rehearsals, and to Libby and the church team for putting up with my calls!

As usual, please bring your own music stand – even if you normally share a desk.

More delay…

We had hoped to restart meetings on 4th July, but unfortunately the delta variant of Covid is now causing concern and the release from lockdown has been put off until at least 19th July. In consultation with our hosts at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, we were offered either half orchestra rehearsals (maximum of 15 people with full Covid safety precautions) or to wait until 19th. There was also a suggestion from some of our members that we wait until September.

On 28th June we had an outdoor social event, which was a pleasant evening even if lacking in sunshine! At that meeting our conductor and Music Director said she was still happy to do rehearsals on 19th and 26th July, and on 2nd August – and as agreed we would be playing not-too-difficult music we are familiar with so that we can get back into the swing of playing together without feeling pressured.

So, subject to agreement with the church management, and the release of lockdown on the right date, those present agreed that that is what we will do. Fingers crossed!

Keep watching!

The End is Nigh!

Well, the end of Lockdown certainly seems to be coming into view. A brilliant well done to scientists all over the globe for spectacular speed in developing vaccines, and to the entire infrastructure which has managed to vaccinate so many of us and start to bring this dreadful virus under control.

We are shortly to have a committee meeting to plan our return to meetings, and look forward to hearing from our beautiful venue’s management team as to when we can use the church again. Spare a thought for them though – they have been playing a full part in helping the community of Willesborough following the explosion which saw many evacuated to the church while homes were made safe.

We will, of course, keep our members informed as soon as any changes occur, and thank you to those who completed the on line questionnaire, our first step in resuming activity. Meanwhile, please have a look at the concert notice below – you will recognise Emmanuel Webb as our gifted soloist from RVW’s “Lark Ascending”.
